How many play lists do I need for my wedding?
I know that I need specific song choices, like First Dance, Father/Daughter dance, Cake Cutting, and Last Dance. I also know that I’ll need ceremony music, dinner music, and dance music. What I need to know is: how many play lists should I break the music into and for which sections? Also, what is the traditional order of events for the reception and how many songs should I have for each? Any help would be greatly appreciated – I’m planning all my own music and having a family member just Emcee for me!
Typically it would be good to break the music into sections according to your reception/ceremony set up. The traditional order of events for the reception is as following:
A typical receiving line is formed as following: Mother and Father of the Bride, Mother and Father of the Groom, Bride and Groom, Maid of Honor, Best Man, Bridesmaid, Groomsman, Bridesmaid, Groomsman, and so on. Upon entering, it would be proper for each to say their name, and role in the wedding. ( For example: Hello! I’m Brianna, Gwen’s maid of honor. )
The first dance of the newlyweds comes next. If you are nervous about your first dance, have your wedding party and/or guests jump in and dance to take the attention away from you as a couple.
Toasts. Typically, the best man will give his toast before everyone begins eating. If there are multiple speeches, have them fall in between meal courses in order to start dinner and break up long speeches. (Those can be very tedious)
Dancing and the cutting of the cake. After the meal is over, guests are free to dance. The newlyweds can then cut the cake. (Extra tip: If you want to cut down on the time your photographer is at the reception, you should cut the cake before everyone begins dancing.)
You throw your bouquet and your husband flings your garter.
You say your goodbyes and you get into your, by now probably trashed, car. Then you can leave for your honeymoon!
