It is a great honor to be chosen to be the best man in a friends weding. One of the duties of the best man is to give a speech where a few kind words are said about your friend and his new wife. Here are a few pointers to ensure that the best man speech goes smoothly:
1. Prepare. As soon as you are asked to be a best man you should start jotting down thoughts and ideas, jokes and quotes that you might want to use in your speech. If you don’t know how your friend and his fiance’ met you should ask. Get as many details as possible. Once you have your ideas down, write out the speech completely so that you can practice it.
2. Keep it brief. Keep the speech long enough so that you say what you wan to say but no more. We have all been to weddings where the best man rambles on for way to long. Your speech should be no more than 4 – 5 minutes ending with a toast to the bride and groom.
3. Introduce yourself. Tell the attendees how you know the bride and groom.
4. Express gratitude. Thank all of the people that made the day possible. Be sure to single out the bride and groom’s parents by name. You can offer a toast to them not only for putting on a great wedding but also for raising two great people.
5. Offer a toast to the bridesmaids. Be sure to mention how great they look.
6. Tell a little story about the bride and groom. You can make the story heart warming or funny. Many times it is the story of how the bride and groom met. Just make sure that the story is appropriate for all ages and won’t embarras or humiliate the bride and groom.
7. Expand on the groom’s virtues. Be sure to build him up. Mention how the groom is the happiest he has ever been since meeting the bride.
8. Propose a toast. Wish the couple all the best together. Often a quote from someone famous is used. Raise your glass to the bride and groom.
Some final words:
Be sure to bring some notes with you. A brief outline will keep your speech on track and ensure that you say every thing that you want to.
Use tasteful humor if you are comfortable with it. Just make sure that your speech doesn’t get off color. Inside jokes are a no-no.
Stay sober at least until after you have given your speech. Countless Wedding Speeches have been ruined by a drunken best man. There will be plenty of time to party after the speech has been given.
